Visakhapatnam is the largest city and the financial capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city also has one of the leading port located on the east coast of the country. The study was based on the vision and future cargo traffic demands of the port, and focused on effective development of Land Use Plan for Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) for the coming five years.

According to the new land policy guidelines for Major Port issued by the Ministry of Shipping, Gol in 2014, it placed explicit importance on optimal utilisation of land under port authority. Pertaining to which the main objective of the development of Land Use Plan for VPT was to ensure that the land is optimised with adequate infrastructure to meet the projected traffic in the future years.
