Project Description

Keeping heritage at the centre of the urban development, HRIDAY scheme focuses on development of civic infrastructure leading to revitalization of the cities as a heritage and cultural destination. Dwarka is one of the 12 cities selected for development under this scheme. It is one of the primary chardhams, and is one of the saptapuri, the seven most ancient religious cities in the country. Dwarka is often identified with the ancient kingdom of Krishna, and is believed to have been the first capital of Gujarat. The city has heritage assets in the form of temples, dharamshalas, kunds, talavs, and havelis dedicated to Lord Krishna.

A total of five heritage sites have been selected for the development at present. Dwarkadhish temple is one of the chardhams of the Hindu pilgrim circuit and the most important public square of the city. Iskcon Gate and Teen Batti are the major access routes from highway to the temple. Vegetable Market is another important public place in the city andalso the central point for food joints and local transportation. Siddheshwar Mahadev precinct is also a tourist attraction and is largely used by sages and local people for offering prayers. DPC is involved in developing detail design in the above mentioned heritage zones by providing public amenities, improving civic infrastructure and tourist facilities and upgradation of heritage properties.
